Why Verify a Funeral Director's License?

When you're trusting someone with the care of a loved one who has passed, you want to know they're properly qualified and legally authorized to practice in West Virginia.

Every funeral director, embalmer, and crematory operator in WV must be licensed or certified by the WV Board of Funeral Service Examiners. Funeral homes must also hold a separate facility license. Operating without proper licensing is illegal under WV Code §30-6-16.

Verifying a license takes only a few minutes and gives you peace of mind that your funeral provider meets West Virginia's professional standards.

How to Verify a License

1

Visit the official Board website

Go to wvfuneralboard.wv.gov and look for the license verification or roster section.

2

Search by name or funeral home

You can search for an individual funeral director or embalmer by name, or search for a licensed funeral establishment by business name or location.

3

Review the results

The roster will show the licensee's name, license type, license number, status (active/inactive/expired), and the funeral establishment they're associated with.

If you can't find someone in the online database, or if you have questions about a specific license, call the Board directly at (304) 558-0302.

What to Look For

When verifying a funeral director or funeral home, check for these things:

Active license status — the license should be current, not expired, suspended, or revoked
Correct license type — a funeral director license, embalmer license, funeral service license, or crematory operator certificate, depending on the services they're providing
Licensed establishment — the funeral home itself must hold a valid facility license at its specific street address
Licensee-in-charge — every WV funeral establishment must have a designated licensee-in-charge who holds funeral director, embalmer, crematory operator, and pre-need licenses (per WV Code §30-6-19)

Your Rights as a Consumer

Under federal and state law, you have specific rights when working with a funeral home:

Itemized pricing — the FTC Funeral Rule requires every funeral home to provide a General Price List (GPL) with itemized prices for every service and product. You have the right to see this list before making any decisions.
Price information by phone — funeral homes must provide pricing information over the phone. You do not need to visit in person to compare costs.
No required purchases — you cannot be forced to buy a package. You have the right to choose only the services and merchandise you want.
Outside caskets accepted — funeral homes must accept caskets purchased from any source and cannot charge a handling fee for doing so.
Embalming is not required — WV law does not require embalming. Funeral homes cannot tell you it's legally required (because it's not).
Written authorization for embalming — a funeral home should not embalm the body without your permission.
